As in most endeavors, you have to be in the right place or the right time, be very lucky, or market, market, market, with lots of social contacts. I had the same question when I started my first novel. Finally, I wrote the first sentence, then the paragraph, then followed the characters. They always lead me to the end. The beginning is determined by the type of book. For instance in my action-adventure books, I always begin with an impossible scene, then let the characters figure out what happened and how to resolve the problem. I guess love stories would began with a little more smoochy stuff, with a complication involved somewhere along the way. Anyway, start with the first sentence of your passion. Otherwise I haven't a clue. I'm half through my current novel of 100,000 words, and the next sentence is always the same struggle as the first sentence. Above all, have fun and enjoy the process.
