Very timely question, I feel. Reaching into my personal experience, I find that most of the impetus for my own writing comes from reading. I've been a voluminous reader all of my life and find that the ideas, opinions, and writings of others all serve as powerful catalysts to set my mind off on a tangent linked (however remotely) to somehing I have read. Once released, not unlike an imp imprisioned in a bottle, these newly catalysed thoughts take on a vivid life and ferocious depth of their own and the rest is fairly easy, since writing has always for me been a strong catharsis (think of it as a mental puragatory, if that helps) to help deal with the accumulated poisons of not always happy life experience. By my reckoning, reflective thoughtfulness is the single most important act anyone may engage in throughout their life, since assuming that the reflectivity is equally matched by intellectual insight, the product that results (writing or communication of ideas to others) serves as a primary link through which to achieve comntextual understanding and intellectual insight. Ideas, thanks to this process, have never posed a problem to me and myh own urge to write. What has been problematic is getting enough feedback to serve as a reliable reality check on my concepts and personal Weltanschaung (since I often imagine I am somewhere out on the fringes of most convention). Given the miserable inadequacies of many human attempts to communicate, the broadcast of ideas, once matched by suitable reciprocity in a 'loop' process, is what (meaningful) qualitative communication is all about, after all...
