This certainly reflects my own childhood Christmas experiences, as I am sure it does for a great many of us. I well recall opening up the boxes marked 'X-mas' that were kept in the garage and finding many fascinating old family holiday heirloom items, including exquisitely crafted old figurines of 'Father Christmas', creche scenes (the sheep sometimes had broken limbs, glued back on), bats of white cotton (simulated 'snow' to place around the small tree we set up, especially fine old tree ornaments and so forth, ad infinitum. Each had, as you point out out, its own special significance and joined the overall number of things that were annually brought out to celebrate the holidays. Those were kinder and gentler times, when I still believed in gods and sins and tannenbaums and Santas and and scary Krampuses. After all these many decades, I am no longer a believer but I still enjoy the beautiful naivete that underlies the holiday season, with its unrealistic, quaint but still serene message of peace and hope for a more humane world, and I attend an Anglican high church Christmas service every year as I would attend a symphonic concert: with the greatest respect for mankind's soaring (but utterly failed) potentials.
