I certainly agree with you here, Ann. Even though I am often an outspoken social critic, I abide by a certain basic regard for human dignity whenever I leave a comment and/or review, anywhere...be it at aprofessional or 'recreational' venue.
But then, I am an older, more mature person who is also an egalitarian who would never deliberately go out of my way to deliberately make another person feel bad or feel lessor in personal worth, regardless of how unwise their outlook or personal take on human affairs might be.
One of the chief failings of so many younger people in our society today (and particularly characteristic of so-called 'blind' social media venues, where hiding behind a cloak of assumed anonymity is almost de rigueur) is a failure to reflect upon the fact that they are dealing with other living, feeling and equally vulnerable peers. Thus, 'snarky' sarcasm and callous, insensitive criticism becomes almost a game to many.
All my life, I have recalled my grandmother's wisdom in reminding me as a child that 'If you don't have something positive, supportive or good to say about others, don't say it...for words, once uttered, can never be fully withdrawn.' Of course, she was Hawai'ian and heir to a remarkable traditional wisdom that had its roots in an ancient Polynesian culture. The Hawai'ians had a profound respect for the spoken word, partly because prior to the coming of the Christian missionaries there was no written Hawai'ian language and all knowledge was transmitted orally. As a result, to this day, I will not knowingly or willingly fling insults at any person, regardless of how richly they may otherwise deserve some (constructive) chastisement.
