No question we DO depend upon oil and its by-products. It powers everything from our cars to our lawnmowers, but we depend on it simply because we DON'T HAVE ALTERNATIVES. In our house, we use natural gas heat, a natural gas water heater, (natural gas is cheaper than oil or electricity) we sort our trash, we absolutely turn off light switches unless we're in the room, power off electronic devices when not in use, we make our own "eco-friendly" household cleaners and have for the past five years,we buy local as much as we can, we "green" garden, and we drive a hybrid car. We are doing our part, but it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, if the big industrialists continue to destroy our planet as they are!

We all enjoy the benefits of petroleum. Your current vacation would most likely not have occurred without jet fuel. Is it right? Ask a gulf sea turtle. Accidents happen. Negligence however is no accident. And negligent use and abuse of scarce resources isn't either. Square one? Patrick

I agree with Ed, we should have been seeking alternative energy resources for decades, instead of destroying our environment at an ever-increasing rate!

Quite a powerfully penned piece, Annabel. But I already see here, that many will still not listen. As we sit here wondering what will happen in the Gulf, many will still insist that we should still continue drilling for the coveted Black Gold, instead of pursuing alternative energy - as we already should have been doing, decades ago.

Annabel, your write is truthful and truly impassioned. However we are a country, actually a world that runs on oil, from the thousands of everyday items we use that are petroleum based to the cars we drive. So, though, what you say is true, logically our, and the world's need for oil and petroleum will never cease. There is an ocean of oil in Alaska and enough oil to hold us for hundred of years beneath the Rocky Mountains and the planes of Kansas but we are not allowed to access what is needed so, yes, what you say Annabel is true: "The Oceans do Scream." But they do not have to. |
