"Thoughts from a Coal Town"

Reading your "Blog" about coal town and the environment reminded me of the decades I hiked in the mountains that surround Los Angeles. Most people, even many that live in Los Angeles, don't know much about the mountains that hover. The San Gabriels are full of deer, bear, mountain lion and more. I've seen ratlers up there. Trails lead to mountain peaks more than ten thousand feet above sea level. I've hiked in snow (sometimes when it's coming down and the trail is covered) in freezing temperatures and stood on what felt like the top of the world where we could look toward the ocean and the Sierra Nevada mountains more than a hundred miles away across the desert. There's sadness when you look down toward Los Angeles in the summer and see the pollution thick like purple soup.
