Why shoud I feel a second class author by doing it. There are plenty of great authors (better than me) out there who use Lulu.

You are so right about wanting to keep 'my style', even if only to keep a limited (by numbers!) set of readers happy and, of course, yourself.
I have no problem with the self-editing - I enjoy the honing process and all your points have helped me make up my mind. It's Lulu!
You have just reminded me of all the points that made me go with them in the first place for my first 3 books.

The reason why I didn't go with the traditional publishing companies is the fact that they take so long to get back to the authors; and yet when they finally get back to you you don't even know whether or not your book will be accepted for publishing, or just one opinionated bullshit thrown at you.

I'd like to think that editors are people too, and people WILL HAVE different opinions. One editor's opinion might differ than another editor's opinion. So how reliable is that?

If I were to give them my books and then let them do a complete chopping into something that I, myself, cannot recognize, then I'd rather do the publishing myself.

The only thing that you must do in self-publishing is BEFORE you take your books into publishing, make sure that are not errors and/or grammatical errors in your books. Double-check it, or even triple-check it; or have your relative read and check it for errors before you take it into publishing.

I'd like to keep my books as "my style", and not the style of the editors.

If someone falls in love with my writings, I will be so happy because it's me and "my style" that the person is falling in love with. I can stand tall to receive the wonderful compliments.

I am one who just went thru what you are going thru...I had the first one done, and still not much in sales without me working my buns off etc...on my own! So..I contracted again for book 2 and 3...because I think it's just as important that we have published works!!!! under our belt...Times are difficult right now, and the literary world/publishers/agents...are mainly interested in "political, scandals, celebrities, etc" issues....otherwise...we just wait in the heartbreakers bin.... I can't wait...and so I just decided to put one book on Lulu...(should be out in a few days)....and...the other I'll keep with the publisher and it could be months??? before it's all processed.... but..I have decided to publish a "how to" book with Lulu very soon....and another "how to" book (diff subjects) with Lulu also... It's just a matter of what we want to do... Good luck in your choice... diff strokes... hugs, lindalaw
