A great blog, Lorna. I've stopped accepting review requests unless I've already read a book by the author and liked his or her work. It's become too risky, and I'm generally a positive reviewer!
Sadly, the behavior you wrote about is further tarnishing the indie author's image which is already coming under fire lately for lack of professionism and poor writing. If it keeps up, (and I suspect it will) more readers will go back to only buying traditional published books, regardless of the format or the price.
Lorna. I agree with almost everything you say. From personal experience one of the hardest things I have found to do is write a bad review about book from people I know.
I have no problem doing a private ctitic and being honest-- if the author will allow me to do that.
I have decided to no longer tell the author that I am reading their book. If I like it I make a review.
What I really need to do and for the reasons you have stated is be honest with the readers and do my part to clean up the indie group to help the readers.
I just can't believe some of the poorly written, unedited and sloopy work that is now out there.
There are diamond there as well but they sometimes get lost in the muck.
One thing that really disturbs me is writers who rush to put out a novella and books of short stories-- That's a personal opinion. Sometimes I think people just want the label of 'author' without putting in the time to write and edit a book. Novella-- new word for half a book. Readers feel robbed.
