Queenhyte Publishers will publish Harry B. Dunbar's "Black Nonfiction Books, Their Authors, and Their Publishers: A History, A Bibliography, and a Memoir" in September 2001. The book traces the development of such books in the United States from 1700-2000.
Queenhyte Publishers has announced that it will publish my "Black Nonfiction Books, Their Authors, and Their Publishers: A History, A Bibliography, and a Memoir" in September 2001. The book traces the history of nonfiction books by and about black people in the United States from 1700-2000. It includes an index and a 907-book bibliography of such books published in the last decade of the 20th century. I believe it is a useful resource for everyone who needs an understanding of the develoment of the black nonfiction book canon. I am pleased to cite the observations of two historians in the field of black studies who have commented on the manuscript for my book.
Professor Robert L. Harris, Jr., Associate Professor of African American History at Cornell University says that my book "...places black book publishing firmly within the context of African American History." Professor Julius E. Thompson, Associate Professor of History and Director of the Black Studies Program at the University of Missouri-Columbia, says that in this book, "...Dunbar captures the complex natureof black publishing." He also notes what he calls an attachment that I have to works "...which reflect upon the universal experience of blacks."
My education, life experiences, career and interests have contributed in significant ways to my writing of this book. I served in a labor battalion in the U.S. Army in Europe and in the South Pacific in World War II. I hold a Ph.D. degree in French and Education and am professor emeritus of humanities of New York City Technical College of the City University of New York. I am the author of "A Brother Like Me: A Memoir" (Queenhyte 1995) and of "Epilogue" in "The History of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity: A Development in College Life" (17th printing) by Charles H.
