The story of William Howe is a fascinating one, but almost no one in the country has heard his tale. A farmer and dedicated husband and father, decorated soldier of the Civil War, he left the army of the Potomac without authorization due to illness, went home to recuperate, was involved in an event that resulted in a man being shot, was judged and found not guilty of murder, was unceremoniously retried a second time and found guilty and sentenced to be hanged. Although only a few men had their sentences carried out for far more heinous crimes where there was no question of guilt, Howe's trial was littered with inconsistencies and errors, but his sentence was carried out quickly, only to have it commuted by President Johnson weeks later, but too late to save him. The story is based on fact, but with so many gaps I have filled them in with conjecture and some loose facts to make a story of love, intrigue, murder and sorrow. I believe that the finished work will meet with my reader’s approval and make them see that William Howe is one of the saddest characters of our country's history.
