He is lean and childish in appearance. But, when his sticks fall on his drum (traditional chenda), the vibration it gives out is music, rhythm.
Anand Madhusoodanan, a young thayambaka artist performed at Sur Beach Hotel auditorium on 11th September Thursday, as part of Sur Malayali community’s Onam Celebration 2003. His performance was accepted by the audience with a pin drop silence.
Thayambaka is an old musical form. In the beginning, it was largely associated with temple rituals in Kerala. Later, it has become inevitable in public functions.
Anand is a Thayambaka student at Unnayi Varrier Smaraka Kalanilayam at Irinjalakkuda in Thrissur for 11 years. He was the prominent disciple of Kalamandalam Sivadasan, to whom the Ministry of Human Resources of the Central Government conferred up a junior fellowship. At present, he is studying under Kala Nilayam Satheesan.
Anand’s “arangettam” or first public appearance was at K.N. Pisharadi Memorial Kadhakali Club at the age of eight years. Since then he performed at a number of stages and temple festivals and got appreciation and awards for his performance. He had won a number of prizes in school youth festivals.
He is a SSLC student at Perambra Higher Secondary School in Kozhikode. Anand came to Sur for a family visit during his Onam vacations when he got the opportunity to participate in the Sur Onam Celebration. It was Anand’s first ever overseas performance. He got invitation to participate in ISC Kerala Wings’ Onam Celebration to be held the next week at Muscat.
Anand is a Thayambaka‘Chenda’ stalwart and extending his areas further in Chenda for Panchari-Pandi melams and Kathakali. He has varied hobbies and interests like poem writing, story writing, drawing and others.
Observing the young Anand’s interest in thayambaka, his father Madhusoodanan, manager of South Indian Bank, Naduvannoor Branch, and mother Vijayam, a Thrissur resident, sent him to Unnayi Varrier Memorial Kalanilayam at Irinjalakkuda at the age of four, where he is continuing for the last 11 years.
A future promise for the art loving Kerala, he was decorated with a Ponnada by Sur Onam Celebration Committee General Convenor Kanakan.
