Pieces of the Quilt is a narrative of Author Anita Wills,  family history. She begins in 1950's Coatesville Pennsylvania with her family.  In the saga her mother shares their family history, going back through the Civil War.  She speaks about the racial makeup of their family, and where they came from. As an adult the author and her mother make a pact to document their family history.

They are now living in Oakland California and the pact becomes a project that last over thirty years. They discover ancestors who served in the Civil War, were Indentured Servants to George Washington, and who fled to Liberia in the 1800's.  The lives of these historical figures are chronicled in the authors first book, Notes and Documents of Free Persons of Color, and in Pieces of the Quilt. 

The stories are compelling and will hold the readers attention from beginning to end. Those featured in this work were real people, whose lived extraordinary lives.
