For Those in Peril On the Sea is a roman a clef set in the mid-twentieth century time frame of 1939 t0 1955. Booker T. McCan is the primary protagonist, mentored by 100-year old Count Nyame, and Flapper Jackson, his former high school math teacher and more recently shore fire control officer on the cruiser Indianapolis. When World War II breaks out, sixteen-year-old Booker T. joins the Navy, determined to avenge the death of his brother killed in action in the Pacific. Booker T, survives the war with three Purple Hearts then returns as an officer to serve in the Korean War. The second half of the book describes the efforts of Count and Flapper to establish a School for Presidents at Tuskegee Institute in the face of violent Ku Klux Klan resistance. In the end Booker T. marries an Okinawan bar girl and takes her to Africa to begin a new life.
The old master came forward and with his left hand grasped the right hand of Hideko, then with his right hand took the left hand of Booker T. Thus connected in a tight circle, Zeng-tzu looked deeply into the eyes of first Hideko, then Booker T. Tall and slim in his gray kimono, Zeng-tzu was a 75th generation descendant of a disciple of Confucious, and looking into his eyes, Booker T. felt connected to the ages. He also noted the odd feeling that, but for their almond shapes, he might well be looking into the eyes of Count.
Zeng-tzu, apparently satisfied with what he saw in the eyes of Hideko and Booker T., broke the circle, and now stood between them, Booker T. on his right, Hideko on his left. Slowly, he turned and led them forward to the large flat rock overlooking the sea. For a long time they stood silently, hands connected, in a line before the rock, looking toward the horizon. Booker T. became aware of pungent fumes coming from two incense burners placed on either side of the rock. At length, Zeng-tzu took two handfuls of star sand from a large porcelain urn in front of the rock, and sprinkled it into the incense burners resulting in a showery display of tiny points of light. He then turned and began to
