What follows is my interview with Natalie Tinti, author of Sewing A Friendship. The interview was done on February 5, 2010.

How did you come up with the interesting names of your characters in Sewing a Friendship?

I like to create all kind of different names. They just pop into my head.

Are the characters based on anyone you know?

My characters are based on a little of everyone around me. I just want to show different talents and abilities and even though we are all different in many ways, we can be friends and help each other.

How did you balance the time between doing your schoolwork and writing a book?

My first book I wrote during summer vacation, and writing my second book I try to fit in my spare time.

It is amazing that you have so much talent for someone who is so young. At what age did you and/or your parents realize you had these special abilities?

I always like to draw very colorful pictures. When I just turned five, my "Bird" drawing got a first place in the 4th Annual Artist Event. I think, when I once wrote a story for Valentine Day in first grade, my father said: "You should make a book out of it".

When you get older, would you like to continue being an author or would you like to do something else?

I would like to continue being a writer and illustrator

When you are not writing, what do you enjoy doing?

When I am not writing, I love to do two things the most: drawing cute characters and play with my friends.

I'm just curious - Do you have a grandmother who rides a motorbike?

Once my mom told me a story when my grandparents had children three and five years old and they had a motorcycle instead of a car in Russia, when they travel, they put their kids between themselves.

How long did it take you to write Sewing a Friendship?

It was a summer vacation. Only three weeks left before shool started. So I was in a hurry to finish my manuscript. So, it took me three weeks to do my draft and draw all pictures, and another two months to edit and correct the story.

Do you plan to write more books in the future?

Yes. I already started my next book about how friends help each other in a difficult situation.
