My book publisher always encourages her authors to market their books. Getting an article into a National magazine is not a bad idea.
It all started with me and my big mouth. "Why don't you publish an article on mundane astrology", I emailed in the 'comments and suggestions' box of the Prediction Magazine web site. That was in the spring of 2004. I had run a web site on mundane astrology since January although the books I had written were on Tarot and Numerology. Never the less, like the subjects that I had written on, mundane astrology was an esoteric discipline. There are not many esoteric magazines in the world and the two biggest - 'Horoscope' and 'Prediction' - had UK National coverage.
It would have been nice to get the attention of 'Horoscope Magazine' because of its US coverage but to get an article in 'Prediction magazine ' is still a very prestigious accomplishment. So you can imagine how surprised I was when I received an email, months later, from the deputy editor saying that it was a very good idea and would I like to write an article on mundane astrology?
'Great' I thought, until I realised that although I had practised the art of astrological prediction - with some degree of success - I was not accomplished enough, in my opinion, to write it alone. Fortunately my co web site partner, John Davenport, is a very good mundane astrologer.
Well, I thought, between us we had run a web site with predictions that had proved to be true. We discussed charts and events at length and, with my writing skills, we had published a number of predictions about world event that even the most knowledgeable person in current affairs could have foreseen. Among our most noted predictions were the impeachment of President Clinton, the British immigration scandal of 2004 and the sudden impact that led to the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
So we set to work on the chart that heralds the beginning of spring - the Aries ingress. 'Prediction Magazine' is mainly a UK magazine so we were asked to concentrate on events in the UK. This article, I knew, had to be good as I was not only putting my reputation on the line but also I wanted the magazine to slip in a plug for my books. They didn't have to, of course, because they were paying me to write an article. Then again I could not possibly pass up an opportunity to give my published works national coverage.
I emailed the article two days before the 10 December deadline, in case the editor came back to me with any problems. On the very next day I got an email back saying that the deputy editor enjoyed the article and it would be published in the March edition.
It was hard, at first, to believe I had achieved some sort of recognition. I imagine that the deputy editor would have at least looked at the World Predictions web site before offering the commission of writing an article to me. That being the case it was certainly worth the effort of creating the web site in the first place. The result of the publication will also mean that my name will be known to the very market that I am selling my books to. Potentially I have opened a doorway to speak directly to the esoteric buying public and got paid into the bargain!
Naturally I am not about to count chickens. At the very least this is merely a small victory for persistence and self belief. But the opportunity was created by opening a back door to the commercial world of publishing and in the future it might be this one door that opens many more.
