The 153-mile Buffalo River, America''s first National River, is one of Arkansas most beloved streams. The river runs through towering tree-lined limestone, sandstone and dolomite bluffs, wild mountain beauty, many waterfalls and abundant wildlife.
Except for one over-night canoe trip on the twenty three-mile wilderness section (where we spotted a bear) we mostly paddled 8 to 10 miles a day for three amazing weeks.
Beautiful Tylor Bend Campground at mile marker 93 and Buffalo Point Campground at mile-marker 122 became home base. We particularly enjoyed RV camping on a bluff with amazing views at Buffalo Point.
Because the Buffalo''s first 70 miles is mostly white-water we chose to begin our trip at Mt Hersey.
The river''s clear green sparkling water, early morning mist, beautiful gravel sandbars, many cliffs, sinkholes and caves were all highlights.
