The weather prediction for the Flint River area was ominous—frequent thunderstorms with a 60% chance of rain. The skies were cloudy and the weather was cool when nineteen GWS members and friends showed up to canoe/float/camp the 11-mile Flint River section between Marshallville and Montezuma. Although we mostly paddled and swam under cool cloudy skies we did get the predicted thunderstorm just as we set up camp on a sandbar about five miles from the put-in. The heavy rain and strong winds made staying dry and putting up our tents a challenge. And then it was over.
The river running around three feet revealed many spectacular sandbars throughout the trip. Besides our lazy paddles many of us floated the length of the longer sandbars in our lifejackets. It’s a lot of fun and much more relaxing than a ride at Six Flags.
Our night’s entertainment was catching up on news from old and new friends as we sat mesmerized by the flicker of the campfire.
One GWS member joined us on Sunday morning. It was a nice surprise. What was his excuse? He couldn’t pack his gear in time!
The riverbank has a thick forest of white and chestnut oak, black gum, sweet gum, sourwood, hickory, buckeye, and tulip polar. The evergreens included loblolly, short leaf pine, and red cedar. Much of the water was lined with tupelo gum and black willow.
A number of small alligators, wild pigs, blue heron, snowy white egret and other birds were sighted. We even had a deer swim across the river right at our campsite.
William L. Brown Farms now sells delicious home-made peach ice cream and other produce near the take-out on Highway 49. Needless to say many of the GWS paddlers ended their trip at the Brown’s produce stand.
