I didn't sell a wholel lot of books, but since the book store owner had predicted that I wouldn't sell more than one or two, I think one could claim success for having sold eight. Besides that, the bookstore owner decided to pay me for the five copies he'd held on consignment, so that made a total of thirteen copies for the day.
I certainly hadn't been looking forward to the experience, being the kind of person who doesn't usually like to put herself out there, and I'd had visions of sitting alone at my table, like a shag on a rock, while the world rushed on unconcerned, and disinterested.
Well, it did begin like that, but then a couple of friends turned up. "We're your rent-a-crowd" they said, and they proceeded to pick up a copy of my book, and be seen to talk animatedly with the lady behind the table. In no time at all, people were actually looking as they walked past, and soon a few actually began gathering. So I began telling my rent-a-crowd about my book, and before long I had my first customer.
My friends had to leave, but they had given me the courage I needed to carry on. I found that by making eye-contact with the passers-by, and smiling at them, some actually came over and began talking to me. As I've said, the result was eight books sold. Not an earth-shattering result, but it netted me enough money to be able to afford to pay for some marketing strategies which I've been putting off for some time, due to lack of funds.
