This is a excerpt from a news release which contains an interview that Alisa DeMao had with Linda Armstrong-Miller. In the article Mrs. Armstrong-Miller talks about some of the road blocks to being a new writer.
Linda Armstrong-Miller, a nurse at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, was introduced to her agent through an acquaintance at church.
Mrs. Armstrong-Miller has one manuscript under contract with the agent, who's shopping it around to publishers. But like Ms. Maurer, she also resorted to nontraditional methods for her first book. She had it published electronically, via the iuniverse Web site, which publishes "print-on-demand" books. Print-on-demand books are printed, bound and mailed to buyers as they are ordered. In the traditional methods, thousands of copies are printed and shipped to bookstores.
"a lot of publishers are afraid of first-time authors." She said. "We have no record and they don't want to print a lot of copies of a book and be stuck with them. Iuniverse gave me a chance to get into the market- kind of a foot in the door kind of thing."
Her first book, a novel called Touched, traces the emotional development of a young doctor. It is available through the Web site at http://iuniverse.com or through Barnes &Noble, which has a partnership with iuniverse. Eventually, it will be available at other bookstore Web sites, such as amazon.com and by order from any bookstore, she said.
She has two more manuscripts including the one her agent is showing to publishers, and she would like to have one of them published and printed conventionally, but she'd consider electronic publishing again, she said.
There are drawbacks to electronic publishing- you have to do your own marketing and it's sometimes difficult to communicate when you're only in contact through e-mail, Mrs Armstrong-Miller said. Also, as with traditional self-publishing, some e-publishers make the writer bear the coats of producing the book. Another downside: Many traditional publishers won't look at a manuscript that has been e-published........
