New book, set in the 1600s and 1700s in south-west Scotland is a prequel to 'Ours, Yours and Mines' and 'Far Across The Sea'.
Faeries, Farms and Folk is dedicated to the many families in Scotland in the 1700s who were uprooted from the only way of life they knew, and cast adrift with little education or prospects for employment in a world they sometimes didn’t understand. They lived simple lives of self-sufficiency on common lands, but after the enclosures when common lands were taken back by the landowners and fenced off, the people lost their homes, their food, their right to hunt and collect firewood and peat – all of the things they needed to survive. People who had only ever known the land and the seasons, were forced to work in soulless factories and mines. As I researched this novel, and discovered how people lived so long ago, I realised just how far we have come as a society. With a greater emphasis on education for all, our standards of hygiene and health have improved greatly. Along with our higher standard of living, life expectancies have also increased. While we can realistically expect to live into our late eighties, the average life expectancy for people in the 1700s was in the low forties. I have learned a lot on my journey of discovery researching and writing this book. I hope you will enjoy reading about life in another time and place.
