Should people be allowed to choose when and how to end their lives? This book explores this topic through a fictional story.
It was a difficult topic to write about and it may be difficult to read about, but I thought it was a story worth telling. I got the idea when I took a cruise from Brisbane to the South Pacific and saw an elderly couple move into the cabin next to us. When they didn't emerge for several days, I became concerned but on day four I saw them walking on one of the decks and knew that all was well. But, it got me thinking - what if they had come on board to end their lives and what would have led them to that decision? I put together an amalgam of people I knew and family relationships to tell a story with empathy. Even now I am uncomfortable with the subject matter, but I felt it was a story that had to be told. I hope it reaches adult children who may be prompted to make a phone call or visit their elderly parents.
