I do not have children (it's a long story...) But I see my books as children. Certainly, I could not have given an actualy child m ore love and attention.
But much like real children, the process that brought them into the world was very different with each of them. TIGERLAND, for example, took six agonizing years to write...and killed a marriage. STRANGE RIVER, which may be the most complex of my novels, came into being in three intense months.
I tried to write something that would win the heart of ":Lisa," a woman in California. That failed completely; she won't talk to me at all now. But the book is finished.
I'm working on two new ones, ARGO and WEATHERMAKER. ARGO is, at this stage. laborious. This is its natural flow and I know better than to disrput it. Perhaps in time, it will come more quickly. But now I have to respect whatever force in the universe prompts me to write.
I have a complete first draft of WEATHERMAKER finished. Now it's the revising and editing. But I like the story and it will be fun to move this forward.
So, my "family" continues to grow...
