I think I have a solution. As I read through the narrative, I felt the characterization of the main character was off. I'm correcting that now and this is giving me a much better perspective of the story as a whole. Said simply, I think it works!
As my fellow novelists know, this is a "one word at a time" process. As I've done with all my novels, I know how the story is going to end. This gives me a target to work towards.
