THE CHIAROSCURO WINS BRAM STOKER AWARD!
On Saturday, May 26th, at the annual Horror Writers Association's awards banquet in Seattle, Washington, ChiZine, The Chiaroscuro's webzine arm of its organization-staffed by Brett A. Savory (President/Fiction Editor), Patricia Lee Macomber (Editor-in-Chief), Steve Eller (Fiction Editor), Sandra Kasturi (Poetry Editor), David Niall Wilson (Columnist), Nick Kaufmann (Copy Editor), William D. Gagliani and Louis Maistros (Book Reviewers), and Philip Brugalette (Film Reviewer)-won the 2000 Bram Stoker Award for superior achievement in the Other Media category.
This marks the first time that a webzine has received the award.
After publishing the Stoker-winning, Nebula- and Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award-nominated story "Five Days in April" by Brian A. Hopkins in its first issue back in 1999, The Chiaroscuro has gone on to secure sponsorship from a major New York mass market publisher, Leisure Books, followed closely by this Stoker win of its own.
These successes lend legitimacy to the argument that web-published fiction can be as noteworthy as print fiction, and that legitimacy is something The Chiaroscuro has been striving to secure.
It has been a remarkable two years for ChiZine, and for webzines in general. "This is just the beginning," says Nick Kaufmann, speaking from his London home. "Doors are opening, walls are falling, and webzines are finally getting the recognition and respect they deserve."
