Michael and Meryl have lived together for six years and there is an understanding they would marry ‘someday’. Michael is a lawyer who is involved in his first racism case in South Africa. In fact, his sister’s old alma mater is the school involved in the lawsuit.
Meryl works at a publishing house and makes sure that she keeps the household running smoothly and Mike is fed and cared for. She has recently decided to take off for three months to research her first novel and Mike is not happy with the idea.
The first part of her journey takes her to London to see her Uncle Ben. It’s during a quick trip to Bath that Meryl meets the charming and handsome Andrei Malakov, who describes himself as a roving professor of literature. Meryl is unaware at the time of their meeting how significant this stranger will be in her life.
Meanwhile Michael has met Marcia Ntuli, the teacher who is being persecuted at school. As he becomes involved in her story, he finally starts to comprehend the immense difference between black and white South African citizens.
As Meryl's sabbatical goes on, she falls more and more under the spell of Andrei and discovers a passion that has unexpectedly taken over her life. Her uncle and partner have grave fears for this relationship but are unaware of the danger that could encompass them all.
Passion, danger, love, friendship and mystery all meet in this gripping and unusual novel. International crime rings, racism and human rights issues add more spice to an already intriguing and well-researched read
