‘The desire for information beyond the borders of Communist countries has again been crushed by the latest edict of the Vietnamese government according to a report by BBC’s Clare Arthurs in Hanoi, Vietnam. ‘Where a decree has been passed by the Communist party, allowing the police to destroy publications that have not been authorized by the party.’
During 1997-1998 author, Leonie Campbell faced the difficulties of publishing her children book ‘Cats Tales’ which was accepted by a well-known publishing house in Hanoi. After a period of three months the Ministry of Culture approved the book, which was printed in both English and Vietnamese, and proved popular with local students. Copies were supplied to the United Nations Unis School, for foreign students who were studying the local language.
Suppression of English language literature is widespread throughout Central Asia, and students are hungry for knowledge of other cultures, classics and international novels. The restrictions on travel visas, impedes the movement of people to international destinations. Bright students who win scholarships to the USA, or Europe must return to their home country; their new skills might help build an informed society for future generations.. Unfortunately the old regime is resistant to change, and western influence is strongly resisted by party members.
Leonie Campbell began her first novel ‘Angels of Saigon’ while living in Hanoi, Vietnam during 1997-1998. Campbell’s involvement with the International Women’s Club and UNICEF encouraged her to write a novel about one woman’s life after the Vietnam War. Campbell’s friendship with Vietnamese women gave her the courage to write their story.
Campbell’s second book "The Baby Merchants" exposes the practices of selling babies to foreigners and the risks involved in this exploitive business. The plight of poverty forces many families to sell their daughters into prostitution, a practice that is perpetuated today.
