My reading time is valuable to me. Just like the kid who wants the most candy he can get for his nickel, I want the most enjoyable or exciting book I can get for my time. The title Hard Cache did not grab me and I had never heard of Charles B. Neff; so I passed on grabbing his book off the shelf for several days. When I did, little did I know I was about to get the most for my nickel!

My leeriness ended fast. By Chapter Two I was fully submerged and not only in the developing characters. Hard Cache has all the components a good thriller requires. It has a compelling cast of central characters, and these characters’ history and their interaction keeps the story moving along at an interesting pace. But I was starting to realize Hard Cache was going much deeper than any surface impressions I’d formed of the book. Much deeper.

In Hard Cache Neff used his substantial depth of knowledge and experience well to draw the reader into a vivid image about life and just how easy it is for the power of evil to enter at any time. I would relate Hard Cache to another one of my favorite novels; The Stand by Stephen King because just like The Stand, Hard Cache will absolutely terrify you on a deeper level.

Charles Neff draws again on his international experience and savvy to craft another roller-coaster of a thriller situated this time right in his own backyard, the Cascade mountains of Washington. The plot is as intricate as ever, culminating in a desperate struggle at 4,500 feet in an early October snow fall involving absconded Russian art treasures and Russian Afghan War veterans, Ukrainian Pentacostalists, local authorities and some familiar characters from earlier Neff novels: retired Swedish policeman and power lifter Magnus Torval and his Nicaraguan fiancee Mariela Fuentes (Peace Corpse) and even Jim Nordberg and Luci Fuentes (Hidden Impact). Neff shows that powerful stories with international links take place in the most unlikely places right around the corner. Be sure to budget a couple of evenings for this one.
