February 2, 2001, marks the tenth year in which the book "Final Exit" has been in consistent publication. In l991 it was the New York Times and Publishers' Weekly nonfiction bestseller.
'Final Exit' was rejected by publishers in New York, London, and Sydney, altho they already knew of Derek Humphry's previous books and his career as a top writer with the London Sunday Times and the Los Angeles Times. So Humphry published it himself, using the Hemlock Society which he had started ten years earlier. It was lucky that it was self-published because it earned Hemlock and Humphry around $1 million each which otherwise would have gone to the publisher. Dell immediately bought the English trade paperback rights of the book which (twice revised and updated) sells consistently. In 2000 Dell (now controlled by Random House) had to reprint 'Final Exit' twice to meet demand.
