On the morning of October 31st the sun cast a pink glow through the attic window.
Jeremiah Littlebat got ready for bed. He wrapped himself in his warm wings as he snuggled in between his cousins, Gregory and Oliver. He gripped the rafter with his sharp toes, hanging on upside down like the rest of his cousins. The attic was the best room in this old house.
Outside, the people of the house raked and bagged leaves that had fallen from the trees. In October, everyone had to prepare for winter.
Inside the attic, Jeremiah drifted off to sleep. But soon he was disturbed by dreams of scary people and scary voices. Inside was safe. Outside was scary!
Tonight would be Halloween. He was nervous. He dreamed of cats and ghosts and monsters. He almost lost his grip on the rafter. Suddenly Jeremiah was wide awake. The sun shone so brightly he knew he should go back to sleep. Bats sleep in the daytime.
The dreams were gone but he began to worry about all the stories he had heard about Halloween from his cousins. This was his first Halloween so he didn’t know what to expect except what his older cousins had told him. He knew they liked to tease him, but what if it was all true?
Then he remembered something Gregory had said just before he went to sleep. “Watch out, Jeremiah,” he whispered. “Watch out for close calls!”
