What happened to this vendor on Saturday, first day of Mushroom Festival
This day was a total wash-out, but not without interest for this vendor. The Independent Author's Guild members who had a booth there all got together and met in person for the first time. After over a year of e-mail visiting, this was a treat and a pleasure. Good company and good fellowship cannot be called "at least." I met Mike Katz, author of "Shalom on the Range," (Larry McMurtry meets Seinfeld) and Donna Aviles, who has written three children's books. ("Fly Little Bird Fly" is the first. All three are about her grandfather, who was actually one of those poor kids sent off on the infamous "orphan trains" from NYC. I enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of the warm home of Dianne Salerni, and watched the rain from her lovely back patio. Dianne's first book is "High Spirits," a fascinating fictionalized history of the Fox sisters, who "invented" and popularized spiritualism. Jack Dixon, author of "The Pict" (a moving YA/Adult novel about the brave defense the Picts made against the only Roman incursion into their misty territory) was unable to attend because of a family emergency, and we were disappointed, as everyone had wanted so much to meet him, as did many shoppers who dropped by the booth the next day hoping to get a book signed by him.
The second day, post storm, was the day we worked our fannies off. I had brought "Independent Heart", and "Genesee", both Revolutionary War romantic historicals and the semi-biographical "Mozart's Wife." Dianne's kids worked like troopers, passing out handouts to crowds. Somehow, sadly, amid all the bustle, I never got that bowl of mushroom soup I'd wanted.
