The central character of the novel is a woman who grew up in the late 1930s and early 40s. Sexual orientation is just one of the secrets Sara feels she must keep in this novel that begins when Janice, one of Sara's nieces, is notified that her sharp-witted aunt hasn't been seen for several days. Janice's panicky drive to find out what's happened begins our journey of discovering that Sara has led a life very different from what her relatives and friends assume. The novel is set in Trenton, N. J. and Washington, D.C., with side-trips to Philadelphia, Baltimore, and West Virginia. Historical events of the mid to late 20th century form a backdrop to Sara's often tumultuous personal life.
