In 1985, 13-year-old Lavinia Masters was raped in her home in the middle of the night. Though an investigation was immediately put into motion, complete with DNA testing on semen samples, her alleged rapist was never found.
Due to advances in technology, and the creation of a cold case sexual assault dept., Lavinia Masters'' attacker was identified 20 years later utilizing the DNA samples taken during the first investigation. The DNA samples were linked to a man who was already imprisoned for another crime.
The identification of her attacker was an emotional experience for Lavinia. On the night of the assault, her attacker held a sharp knife to her throat and told her that if she told anyone what had happened he would come back and kill her. For 21 years she had waited for the closure that seemed as though it would never come. She poured herself ingo writing, recording her feelings in notebooks and writing poetry, some of which will be published in her forthcoming first book, "Breathe Again". In addition to writing and lobbying for DNA funding for victims of sexual assault, Lavinia Masters is also a public speaker, spreading a message of healing and of faith.

So for seventeen years, I carried an empty space around in me hoping to fill it with that missing piece of my true identity where now I realize that I should have dedicated my time and energy in trying to identify my true purpose in life. So then I discovered a woman in Matthew 26-7-13; which owned an alabaster box filled with a very precious and priceless ointment. This same woman took this valuable ointment and poured it on Jesus’ head as he sat and ate. Then as the disciples witnessed her actions they began to criticize her because they felt that she had just made a waste. For this very same ointment could have been sold for much money and distributed to the poor. However Jesus rebuked his disciples and even questioned their indignation and as He spoke, he went on to remind that the poor will be with them always but that he would not. Jesus also went on to tell them that the woman did what she had done for a purpose and that was for Jesus’ burial. He also went on to tell them that because of her sacrifice; that wherever the gospel shall be preached in this entire world that this pouring of a precious ointment from an alabaster box will be mentioned as a memorial for her. Now three years later, I realize that the empty space that I had carried around was not empty at all but that it was my alabaster box filled with a very precious ointment and because I knew not the purpose of my ointment I thought it to be bitter and stale and having no value but with a touch from God I discovered that is was sweet and valuable. This ointment I carry is empowerment that I gained as a survivor of sexual assault.
