PROCTORVILLE -- Take a stroll down Highland Drive at Proctorville and experience a nostalgic neighborhood, created by close-knit families, children playing and a common meeting place.
That place would be the yellow house with burgundy shutters at the end of that dead end street. Kids gather there to jump on the trampoline and parents congregate for breakfast and discuss the latest talk of the village.
Those families form daily, entertaining stories that will soon be available via the "Peach Street Follies." It's a children's book that 50-year-old Susan Pennington, a lifelong native of Proctorville, wrote to tell the stories of what goes on with the children and families in the neighborhood -- with only slight embellishments.
The book is anticipated to be for sale in about six weeks, said Pennington, a retired registered nurse and stay-at-home mom. It is being published by Publish America. "Peach Street Follies," will be able to be tracked and ordered at Barnes and Nobles, Amazon and other stores and Web sites, by giving the book's ISNB number, 142415796X.
"They inspired me," said Pennington, looking at her grandchildren. "They're just little stories like the tooth fairy and kids playing ball. Just little simple things. It's entertaining."
Pennington earned the name "Nanna" throughout the community for her motherly ways and involvement with the community's endeavors. Parents meet frequently to discuss events with her. And not to mention, they all come back for Nanna's meal or snack for the day. The neighbors agree that Pennington -- who is raising two grandchildren, Emily and Lyndsey Cornell, with her husband, Glen -- is like a second mother to many in the community.
"Everybody congregates here," said Kara Hammond, a neighbor. "It's therapeutic. There's just always kids knocking at the door. My kids don't want to come home because they are at her house."
Along with Hammond's kids, other neighborhood children have designated the Pennington house the place to go when parents aren't at home. It's also a place for the kids to catch lightning bugs and play with each other after school.
