Writers are such an incredible species.
They use words to make their worlds come alive
for readers.
They can write about murder, romance, adventure,
vampires, mystery or just about any other
topic without actually having experienced it.
(Well, we hope everyone experiences romance.)
However, in today’s market, it is also up to the writer to be his/her own publicist. One way to do that is to
speak at various civic and fraternal organizations, writer’s groups, book clubs, bookstores and conferences.
Speak? As in -- out loud? In front of an audience?
The fear of public speaking ranks right up there with the fear of death and snakes.
Few writers can sit down and pen a novel without doing the proper research, character sketches and plotting. I can show you how to prepare for a speaking engagement in much the same way a writer prepares to write. The process is much simpler because speakers generally talk for about an hour and writers take just a little longer than that to finish a novel. But the outline I use is easy to follow and I give fun examples that will make you feel much more comfortable about getting up in front of a group.
One of the things we’ll discuss is credibility and credentials, so perhaps I should give you mine. I have a Masters in Communication, have taught public speaking in grade school through college, and have written a book on public speaking. I worked for public television fourteen years where I was on-air, moderated programs, and gave countless presentations. Before that, I taught elementary school and made over 100 presentations at teacher workshops, and state and national conferences.
Another important aspect of successful public speaking is knowing your audience. I am a multi-published author of fiction and non-fiction, and currently have 5 books on the market – full length romance, ghost stories, and short stories in anthologies. I will have 4 books released this year in both print and ebook formats, and stories in at least 2 anthologies. I know what it’s like to be an author.
