I believe that music is very important not only to human life, but to life in general. It allows us to express ourselves on a level that transcends simple verbal communication. While simple verbal communication can tell us a story or tell us what a person is thinking, it can also be deceptive. You can say one thing and mean another. Yes, nonverbal communication does aid us in determining what a person really means or is actually saying by filling in the blanks. For example, you can say that you are happy about going to your in laws for dinner, but in your mind you are not all that eager to go. Non verbal communication, such as your facial expressions, posture and even hand gestures can unknowingly give away your true feelings. So, most people have learned to combine the two, verbal and non verbal communication to figure out exactly what you are saying.
With music though, it is a little harder to hide your true feelings. I believe music comes directly from our inner being or our heart. You can sing an uplifting song with a very strong and uplifting beat, but if your heart is broken or sad, that sadness and/or brokenness will overtake the words and the music. So it is hard to hide your feelings in music.
I also believe that music is one of the foundational elements of all things. Some of you may have heard of the Higgs Boson particle, commonly known as the “God Particle”. It is said to be the single element that is found in and is active in the creation of mass or matter. Just recently, they found that the particle has a “sound” and scientists are working with music composers as we speak to figure out the different sounds and tones that it makes.
In chapter one of the book of Genesis (Book of Beginnings), God speaks the universe into being. I actually believe that He sang it into being. Sounds different to most, but I believe that it is totally possible. I believe this not because of the “God Particle” but because it makes sense. The “God Particle” merely backs my contention. In order to express His full love for His creation, He fully expressed His heart; and I believe He did it in a song.
Think about it. Can’t you picture Him singing into nothingness and creating this beautiful world we live in? I see the heavens opening up and the sun shining through at the lovely sound of His melody. I see the stars getting brighter with each note, the water rushing to the harmonious beat as the trees clap their hands to the melody of the wind. All of the birds chiming in and repeating verse for verse while the flowers open up their pedals to get a better listen. Mountains begin to rise up out of the earth as the animals stomp their feet to the rhythm….it is possible!
Music is important because it is a part of all of us. And as a part of all of us, we can use it to promote unity, love and positivity to one another.
