Last week I flew to Maui to watch whales. We do a lot of that here in Hawaii from early December to mid-April. These mammoths summer in Alaska where they feast, then winter in Hawaii---like many humans--for romantic interludes and, the following year, for giving birth. Our whale watch saw a baby humpback whale leap totally out of the water and dive back in--unusual because they have to be several weeks old before they can coordinate their spines well enough to do that. We saw the mother whale breach and blow, a couple of males breaching in tandem--they swam under and around our boat for about a half hour, preventing us from returning to port at the scheduled time--not that any of us minded! It was like God had a check list--"Okay, they've seen the baby. Now, let's get the mother up there. Hmm. Some males, too...." Our boat biologist said it was the best tour they'd had in several days, a real grand slam. PTL!
