Best Children''s Book published in Hawaii in 2003 went to LULLABY MOON.
Every year, the various publishers in Hawaii nominate their favorite products for the KA PALAPALA PO'OKELA Award, or "Best in Published Books." A committee of readers reviews all the nominated books and votes on which they think are the best.
I was thrilled when LULLABY MOON received the award for best children's book, fiction and non-fiction, published in 2003. The illustrator, Tammy Yee, was with me to receive the framed certificate.
The book is a simple story about a little boy who can't get to sleep. He wishes he could go outside and see what is happening. Pueo, an owl, hears him, sprinkles on magic shrinking dust, and carries him all over Hawaii to view the birds, ants, whales, seahorses, and many other creatures, discovering how they sleep--or don't sleep! Fascinating scientific information is under the lift-a-flaps, making it interesting for a wide age-range of children.
In addition, a CD specially recorded for the book by Malia Elliot is included. The CD has the well-loved song, "Pueo" and a new song, "Lullaby Moon." Malia's clear, sweet voice now sings restless babes and children to sleep all over the world.
