This year’s entries made the job of choosing the winners a real challenge. Interpretations of the "Rebel Heart" theme ran the gamut from familiar (and often repeated) to blow-your-mind original. Overall, ten stories made the semi-finals. Of those, five made the final cut.
Andrea Baker of the United States earned First Prize for her humorous tale "Me and Jimmy," which breathed new life, so to speak, into the rebel's rebel, James Dean. Penny-Anne Beaudoin of Canada expounded "On the effects of having been kidnapped by gypsies at an early age" with few words and no dialogue to garner Second Prize. Honourable Mentions were also awarded to Mike Gross ("Bar-Mitzvah Speech at 32"), Tracy Koretsky ("I’ve Come to Take Your Picture"), and Vanessa Winn ("Dicentra Spectabilis").
The top two stories were published in InkSpotter News 4.08, which is available at http://inkspotter.com/publications/newsletters/inkspotternews/archive.htm. Mary E. Gray, writer and long-time InkSpotter News subscriber, had this to say. I very much enjoyed both, but I have to say the ending of "Me and Jimmy" really tickled me. i didn't see it coming, and I about fell out of my chair laughing."
