The story begins with the death of a young air RAF pilot, John Laine, during the 2nd World War followed by the death of his wife, Betty Laine, in an accident days later. Their newborn twin sons are placed in an orphanage.
More than 40 years later, New Scotland Yard Inspector Philip Graves is recovering from the death of his partner after a drugs operation had gone terribly wrong. Ordered to take sick leave and return to his home town in Willenbury, 50 miles north-west of London, Grave’s arrival coincides with a brutal, near fatal attack on his father.
Graves is slowly drawn into the investigation of his father’s attack. He soon discovers that his father, a retired police sergeant for the local force, had been working on a strange case involving a mummified body placed in a bridge column during construction in 1960.
Graves realises that this case is related to the attack. Each clue brings him closer to uncovering a mystery that has remained unsolved for nearly half a century.

Paul Hupton has admired the work of classic authors such as Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as well as contemporary crime writers such as PD James and Ruth Rendell for many years. He is employed as a Chartered Engineer, and has used his experience in this field in creating the story. He and his wife Eileen have been married for 25 years and live in Manchester, England. They have two children: Jonathon and Luke. In the Mood is his first book, but he considers it the first of many cases for New Scotland Yard detective Philip Graves.
