At the onset of this novel, the descriptions of Maggie and her surroundings are slightly juvenile, the images of a young girl who is learning about the world the hard way. Maggie has turned 18 and due to tragic circumstances, she has lived a sheltered life in an orphanage. As Maggie matures, albeit through necessity, Ms. Cadelo's writing style matures as well. It is evident that the author wishes us to grow along with Maggie and empathize with the various situations that befall her throughout her life. Her sense of optimism is refreshing, if uncommon in the twenty-first century.
The Legacy, not only the inheritance of a decrepit building near Harlem occupied by elderly tenants, is a story with a sense of purpose. We all have something we need to accomplish in our lives, God shows us a purpose and a direction, whether or not we choose to follow an unlikely path can alter our destiny, as is shown by Maggie's unusual choices. Full of determination, Maggie touches the hearts of all those she meets, and does not question her purpose. She does not ask why her life was filled with hardship or unlikely situations, but takes everything to heart, believing that she alone must better the lives of those now in her care.
This novel encompasses many genres, from simple love story to one of perseverence and a life that comes full circle. We learn that giving of ourselves achieves the ultimate happiness. Maggie Claydon overcomes her various obstacles to achieve an inner harmony that touches each reader as well as the characters in the novel. Her legacy is not merely an inheritance, but is the selfless giving of herself to others. It is Maggie's ability to empathize with and aid those who need assistance, whether spiritually, emotionally or physically, that allows her life to be full, and allows the reader to ponder his/her own actions and thoughts. She provodes a home filled with friendship, love and comraderie from the first moment she enters the apartment building on Chauncey Street, her legacy.
Each character in the book has a certain relevance, from kindly Hank Sweet, who shows the intrinically good nature of people to Jake Murphy, who needs Maggie to find his own worth and value in the world.
The Legacy, overall a pleasant story, has a predictable plot. There are no surprises at the end, but this novel is touching. It will make you believe in the power of love, in faith, and in the strength of self that is inherent in all human beings. Good triumphs in the end, and that is what it is all about.
