PROLOGUE from THE LEGACY
It was a gloriously warm morning. I was in my seventy-sixth year and spring had come early for once -- a gift. I was eager to be in my garden and it had been on my mind that the roses needed some attention to get off to a good start, so I'd brought with me a can of coffee grounds to enrich the soil, knowing how much they loved that.
I remembered thinking how lovely and still it was that morning, as I knelt on a towel beneath my uncooperative knees, the aroma of the fertile earth on my hands, when I felt a chilly breeze travel up the back of my neck causing me to shudder.
All at once, a tingling sensation ran up and down the trunk of my body then down one arm, as a tremendous pressure grew in my chest and my breath caught. My eyes had closed and yet, there was a blinding flash of light as I fell onto my side, and I lay there beside my magnificent yellow roses.
When I opened my old, watery eyes, it was as though a gauzy veil had been lifted, everything was so unbelievably crystal clear. The tingling had stopped and I felt remarkably light as a feather.
I sat up and saw that I was not alone. Two figures stood nearby. I shielded my "new" eyes against the bright sunlight and made out the shapes of two women before their features sharpened, unmistakably. Funny when you know something isn't possible, but you must test it anyway.
"Mrs. Everhart?" I said. "Is it you?"
She smiled and looked to the other woman who then held her hand out to me. I rose easily and walked toward my visitors. There, beside my beloved Mrs. Everhart, was a woman with my face and the striking eyes I remembered from my infancy.
"Mama?" I asked in the voice of a small child.
I understood then, they had come for me this day; my work here was finished. There was no need of speech as they encircled me in their ring of love, and in the blink of an eye, we were one with the breeze that rustled through the leaves in my garden, like a whisper.
