On the High Seas is a collection of short stories based on true life experiences involving the author’s life on the water. The book chronicles the adventures of a young boy who accepts a challenge from his Dad, continues on to a “Tom Sawyer” like raft trip down the rain swollen Altamaha River in South Georgia and culminates with a day sail that almost turns catastrophic.
Ken Medernach wrote On the High Seas to inspire young people to seek their dreams, but only after they have adequately prepared themselves for the task. The first story in the book illustrates that careful preparation and training help and is critical to the successful accomplishment of one’s goals. The second story illustrates that even though the participants were well trained, the lack of adequate preparation brought them in close proximity with calamity. In the final episode two men embrace haphazard and “devil-may-care” attitudes which, without their prior experiences, could have had much more serious consequences.
