Petronella, who is also a former world class runner, and 1980 Olympic contender, states she expects to complete her goal by Mothers Day, May 10, 2009.
"We have a mission to sell one million medals to one million mothers, to help one million or more children. The most profound, athletic act a woman can do is give birth," explained Petronella. "This is my international tribute to mothering and womankind. My goal is to honor women who birth, raise, educate, and cope with the demands of motherhood with this innovative, gold medal." .
The ultimate goal for Lynn Petronella and The Athlettes Foundation is to strengthened families by providing acknowledgement, support, and opportunities which enhance their sense of belonging in the community.
"A world class marathon might last 2 hours and 30 minutes, but an average delivery can be 20 - 30 hours." stated Petronella. "That deserves something special... which is why I have designed this medal with a woman wearing a laurel wreath in victory where she is looking up at here child. I wanted to give tribute to mothers for this as I believe it is greater than any other event with the sacrifice and commitment that goes into it. "
