Many laws that are on the books today are a hundred years old or older and do not reflect  contemporary knowledge and attitudes. Regardless of what we believe to be appropriate sexual behavior for teenagers, the facts are that the average age of 1st intercourse is 16 for girls and 25 % of them 14 and younger have had intercourse.

Age of consent laws very from state to state and have risen in recent years as a results of the women's movement, in an effort to prevent abuse of young girls  and child marrages The age of consent used to be 12 in the state of Mississippi. It is 18 here in Wisconsin and several other states.

For teenage boys living here in Wisconsin, only a few miles can mean the difference between legally having consentual sex with a girl under 18, and committing a crime that would ruin him for the rest of his life, because in our neighboring state of Iowa the age of consent is only 14. This may be because that state has a rural tradition. 

We all know that the sexual urage is very strong in all normal people, and sometimes urgent as well. When I was 11 I was almost raped by a ten year old girl.This girl was very intelligent and well behaved. I was having trouble in school and had such a bad speech impediment that the only people who could understand me were the people who were around me all the time. Seems as if she made a bad choice.

Also, laws sometime have a one shoe fits all concept..Perhaps,it is time to reexamine them.
