Professor David Horner of the Australian National University has been commissioned to write a two volume history of the Australian Security Intelligence Organization. Professor Horner''s research assistant on the project visited Val Wake in May 2010.
Val Wake's book No Ribbons or Medals the story of 'Hereward' an Australian counter espionage officer did not raise much of a stir when it first came out.
It was first published in 2004 and shortly after the publisher went bust. For awhile the book was not available and then a digital printer operating a print on demand business added the title to its list.
Since then a small number of academics and security specialists interested in the history of the Australian intelligence community have started ordering copies.
The most recent was Professor David Horner of the Strategic and Defence Studies at the Australian National University ( ANU) in Canberra.
Professor David Horner has been commissioned by the Australian Security Intelligence Orgtanization (ASIO) to writes its history.
The project is expected to produce two volumes. The first volume is not likely to be published until 2013.
In late May 2010 Professor Horner's research assistant visited the author of No Ribbons or Medals in Port Macquarie.
Wake gave his visitor free access to his research papers and the researcher has taken some the papers back to Canberra.
It is understood that the first volume of the official ASIO history will deal in detail with security service organisations and operations before ASIO was formed in 1949. Wakes' papers are expected to throw some new light on security work in Australia.
