Memoir of author and adventurer Val Wake is scheduled for launch in Australia
Melbourne publisher Sid Harta is getting ready to produce the first print run of My Voyage around Spray with apologies to Captain Joshua Slocum.
Val Wake's part memoir traces his early interest in boats but more importantly tracks his travels around the world and follows his re-discovery of Australia after an absence of nearly 40 years.
'I was very reluctant to call this book a memoir. I believe a memoir would have more to say about me.
'Essemtially My Voyage takes a look at modern Australia and how its changed since I started on my life's journey.'
Not everything that Wake found was welcome. He was particularly critical of the 'sea change movement' which in his view changed the nature of many small coastal communities not always for the better.
'When we first came to Port Macquarie there was one set of traffic lights. Today there are more than ten and counting. I'm not saying that development is wrong but when it is forced on a community at the expense of the quality of life I think something is wrong.'
Wake builds his story around his small yacht Spray which was named after Joshua Slocum's Spray, the first man to sail single handed around the world.
Slocum is a long standing hero of Wake who was first introduced to Slocum's achievement while attempting to reach the North Pole.
There will be further announcements about the launch nearer the date.
