Professor up for Eppie Award

Larry Rochelle may soon have less room on his fireplace mantle.
The English professor at Johnson County Community College is a finalist for two Eppie Awards for two of his books — a poetry collection entitled “Siren Sorcery: Magic in the Night” and the action/adventure novel “Cracked Crystals.” Eppies are given out by EPIC (Electronically Published Internet Connection) — a Web site for e-books. Winners of the award will be announced March 13 at the Epic Conference on the Queen Mary in Long beach, Calif.
“You never know what the judges will like,” said Rochelle, a professor since 1978. “I’m just happy I’m a finalist.”
“Cracked Crystals” continues the story of Palmer Morel, a tennis-playing hero modeled after Rochelle’s father, Palmer Rochelle, who was a doubles champion from Toledo, Ohio. It is the sixth book in the series. The book tells how Morel helps the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department catch people involved with crystal meth. It includes scenes in Westport and the West Bottoms.
“Siren Sorcery: Magic in the Night” contains three sections of poetry. The first is called “New Orleans Jazz,” the second is “Kansas City Blues” and the last section is called “Toledo Ballads.”
Much of Rochelle’s inspiration for his poetry comes from living in Kansas and Ohio. He started writing poems in notebooks about 30 years ago and now spends about an hour a day writing poetry, often up to three poems a day.
“Dust Devils: Collisions With the Wind,” won the Kansas 2004 Nelson Poetry Book Award. The award was announced at the Kansas Authors Club Convention held in Topeka in October 2004. A copy of the book was presented to The Spencer Research Library at the University of Kansas.
“Pistol Whipped,” his third book of poetry, was published in October.
The Eppie Awards have been given annually since the first EPIC conference to recognize outstanding achievement in e-publishing. Categories are judged by members of EPIC, who are all published authors. After the first round of judging, the works of the finalists are sent to another panel of judges and winners in all 18 categories are selected.
Rochelle has written books since 1997. He has published eight books either in paperback or online. Along with his six novels and three poetry collections, he also has an advice book called “Prof Rap,” which gives advice to incoming college freshmen on college life.
He plans on releasing another poetry book in the spring and then another novel in the fall.
