Durham, NC, ophthalmologist and poet Eugene Grace started something when he invited friends to read poetry with him over lunch in Carrboro in February, 1978. Before long, a phenomenon known as Friday Noon Poets was drawing poetry lovers from all over the area to weekly verse-a-thons. For decades, readings were conducted on UNC's home campus in Chapel Hill. You can imagine how easy it was to park. Thanks to a local church that enjoys a central location, these days, parking is a breeze. Room's just the ticket!
Membership is open to anyone who likes poetry. If you live in the vicinity, think about attending. Doesn't matter if you write. Doesn't matter where you live. Doesn't matter if you can't attend regularly Attending one meeting makes you a member in full standing. You won't believe the benefits.
Meetings are conducted in such a way that everybody has a chance to read. Time is l2:30-1:30, but a social 'hour' begins at noon, so come early if you can.
Reading is optional. Members who write poetry sometimes read poems they have written. Other times, they bring in poetry by other poets, known and unknown.
Always on Friday is Friday Noon Poets' second anthology. Poetry Under the Stars debuted in 1979.
David T. Manning and J. Douglas Stuber did a fabulous job of compiling and editing the new anthology. Paul Aaron and Ellen Giamportone lent their considerable photographic talents. Giamportone tied the bow with her layout and cover design. All helped make "Always on Friday" a beauty with style, class, and depth. The poetry is wondrous.
On a personal note, I bless the day I joined Friday Noon Poets. I could not be prouder to have work in the anthology.
