When I was 8, a teacher took pity on me and praised a tear-stained tale I had turned in about losing my dog, Nippie (who cooperated by being a runt-of-the-litter cur with a crippled back leg). Little did I know that divorce and a move would make the story true virtually overnight. Point is, the teacher took the trouble -- even copied the story and made up little books to pass around.
