Although the value of books generally increase upon an author's death, I am pleased to say, my works are remaining in their usual day-to-day popularity. On April 22nd I developed a rare bacterial infection and was rushed to the ER, where I was served with nary a wait. I was on the operating table within 2 hours. This infection, called necrotizing faciitis or Fournier's Gangrene, has a 70% fatality rate, but, because I detected the noxious smell of gangrene (a talent acquired in the Army in the 60's), my timing saved my life. Five surgeries and 3 months later, I am back among the living. I have even returned to work (the day job most author's mock, but I am glad to say is a welcomed balm).
To think I would have never completed my latest tale or properly shepherded my 40 published books into those awaiting strangers on-line who are looking for bread crumbs to follow for a good read. In any case, the day one dies is generally a day of unfinished business. I was spared and, I believe, God has a special purpose for me. So fellow authors, readers and those who wake up on thi side of the ground, you never know when an uninvited germ will arrive to feast on your flesh. I am now reminded every time my buttocks hit a chair.
Thank God and all those readers who sent me their good wishes and prayers during the ordeal. I am back and working on book 41, 42, 43 . . .
